Healthcare Providers Trained to Improve Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services for Sexual and Gender Minorities

In an effort to bridge the gap in access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for sexual and gender minorities (SGM), Shinners Community-Based Organization (C.B.O) has embarked on a critical mission to educate healthcare providers. The initiative comes in response to growing concerns about the exclusion and violation of fundamental human rights faced by groups such as lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender individuals within Ministry of Health (MOH) facilities.

Despite efforts to integrate SRH services into these facilities, many SGM individuals continue to report discrimination and a lack of adequate healthcare support. Shinners C.B.O., with the generous support of the Mercury Phoenix Trust, has launched a sensitization program aimed at improving service delivery for SGM. The program focuses on empowering healthcare providers with the knowledge and tools needed to foster inclusivity and equality in healthcare access.

The objectives of the sensitization initiative include:

  • Analyzing Policies: Healthcare providers reviewed key policies that influence access to SRH services by SGM, with a focus on identifying areas where existing frameworks may fail to protect their rights.
  • Determining Uptake: Providers were tasked with assessing the current uptake of SRH services by SGM, uncovering gaps in service utilization and areas for improvement.
  • Exploring Barriers: The program highlighted the social, cultural, and institutional barriers faced by SGM when attempting to access healthcare services, including discrimination, stigma, and lack of provider awareness.
  • Strategizing for Improvement: Providers worked collaboratively to devise strategies that can be implemented to improve access and uptake of SRH services by SGM, ensuring a more inclusive healthcare environment.

Thanks to the continuous support of the Mercury Phoenix Trust, this initiative marks a significant step toward reducing healthcare disparities and fostering a more equitable healthcare system for sexual and gender minorities.

By sensitizing healthcare providers and improving their understanding of SGM-specific challenges, Shinners C.B.O. aims to create a safer, more inclusive healthcare environment where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can access the services they need without fear of discrimination.
