Addressing Structural Factors to Combat HIV Vulnerability
admin2024-04-11T07:19:50+00:00In the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS, it’s increasingly evident that the root causes of vulnerability extend far beyond individual behavior. Structural factors such as violence, poverty, stigma and discrimination, and gender inequality play a significant role in exacerbating susceptibility to the virus. Kisumu Shinners Community Based Organization (C.B.O) is at the forefront of addressing these structural factors, particularly focusing on violence against key populations, recognizing its pivotal role in enhancing HIV vulnerability.
The impact of violence on HIV vulnerability cannot be overstated. Epidemiological modeling has underscored its significance, suggesting that the elimination of sexual violence alone could prevent a substantial portion of HIV infections in Kenya. In fact, it’s estimated that addressing sexual violence could avert up to 17% of HIV infections in the country over the next decade, primarily by mitigating non-condom use among Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) and Male Sex Workers (MSWs).
One disturbing revelation is the role of law enforcement agents as a significant source of violence against key populations. Kisumu Shinners C.B.O has identified a concerning trend of increased violence against MSM and MSWs perpetuated by law enforcement. To tackle this issue head-on, the organization initiated sensitization meetings with law enforcement agents. These sessions aimed to educate them about HIV, human rights, and the ramifications of their interpretation and implementation of laws on the efficacy of HIV-prevention interventions.
By targeting structural factors and engaging in community sensitization and collaboration with law enforcement and other stakeholders, Kisumu Shinners C.B.O is making significant strides in reducing HIV vulnerability among key populations in the region. However, the journey is far from over, and continued support and collaboration will be essential in sustaining and expanding these efforts. Together, we can create a future where HIV vulnerability is mitigated, and all individuals have access to the necessary resources and support for a healthy life.
